QoE for all interactive video based use cases

Steinwurf’s FEC Can Help Ramp Up the QoE for all Varieties of Video Solutions

Video Solutions are quickly becoming the new norm to bring businesses and customers closer together without the need to travel to events or businesses and replacing in person meetings for consumer services like banking, doctor’s appointments, e-learning and other consultations. Steinwurf’s FEC solutions can help businesses ensure smooth and stable video solutions across a number of these use cases:

Using RLNC to Supercharge Video

To maintain the in person experience and ensure high a QoE for video communications and interactive services requires a more sophisticated approach.

Steinwurf use the latest RLNC technology in our FEC solutions to provide this extra ingredient and ensure smooth, high quality, and ultra low-latency video.

Our powerful next gen solution ensures that common network issues like packet loss are easily overcome on the fly so there’s no need to buffer and video can be delivered in real time at great quality to all viewers.

Steinwurf’s low latency FEC had the added feature of being content aware, which means it can proactively protect more important parts of a video stream such as iframes and reduce the amount of repair required for less important frames which have marginal impact on the QoE. The result is a more efficient, ultra low latency and lower cost solution that would be possible without our FEC solutions.

Optimise Latency, Reliability and Overhead with Steinwurf’s Solutions

Steinwurf’s FEC solutions help optimise all the core KPIs to make sure SD-Wan providers can deliver a great QoE at much lower cost. Legacy FECs force trade-offs where RLNC / Steinwurf’s FEC does not make you choose:

Steinwurf’s FEC can overcome the trade-off dilemma between reliability; latency; and efficient use of bandwidth (overhead)

We can be faster, better, and cheaper than any other solution in the market with:

Unbeatable Latency - to ensure VoIP, video calls, financial transactions are running at top speed without any delay.

Lower Overhead - keeping bandwidth and hardware usage to a minimum so costs don’t skyrocket.

Higher Reliability - to ensure smoother application performance and long-term customer satisfaction.

How Well Do Video Solutions Perform With & Without Next-Gen FEC

We ran a number of tests on video conferencing solutions to demonstrate how well they perform in the presence of packet loss

As you can see, in the presence of packet loss, a vanilla video conferencing solution experiences stuttering and lag and the experience is not at all smooth

When we use Rely in conjunction with the video application, the packet loss is not at all noticeable and the video comes through as if you’re holding the camera.

Having a ‘good enough’ solution is not what consumers expect. If your service isn’t excellent consumers have a lot of choice and can simply switch their technology supplier.

FAQs

What does Steinwurf’s FEC do and how does it perform based on CPU and memory utilization?

In general the performance of ECC/FEC algorithms depends greatly on a few key parameters e.g. - how many packets you include in each repair packet. Also, ECC/FEC algorithms perform calculations in something called a finite field. Which can be quite slow - unless you have hardware acceleration enabled. All our algorithms are optimized using SIMD acceleration on both ARM and x86, so in many cases CPU and memory utilisation of our FEC is imperceptible. In general we can "tune" the parameters to match a specific target. In particular with a RLNC based FEC/ECC algorithm such as ours we have a lot of flexibility on that side.

What is the target packet loss range where it makes sense to use Steinwurf’s FEC?

There really isn't any upper bound on the amount of packet loss that can be fixed using Steinwurf’s FEC. The repair rate can be adjusted on the fly - which is recommended to get the best bandwidth and reliability trade-off. However, in general if links are very broken (very bursty losses) it may not be feasible to fix with an ECC/FEC algorithm. In our experience, many typical deployments aim to fix between 0-5% or 0-10% packet loss while maintaining a latency target. If you have any non standard requirements, we can recommend the best approach to achieve your goals after an initial call.

How does the integration process work for Steinwurf’s FEC?

The following link in the Rely documentation gives a broad outline of the integration process for Rely: https://rely.steinwurf.com/docs/latest/integrating_rely.html.
