Use cases - Multi-casting

Many networks today need to distribute content to multiple devices simultaneously, with only intermittent or lossy wireless connections to rely on. OTAcast, our ‘stateless’ FEC solution makes Over-The-Air delivery to IoT devices fast, reliable and cost effective.

Networks with many IoT devices such as sensors, networked devices in smart cities or machines on a smart factory floor, need to have a long life and little to no maintenance from a human to be cost effective and environmentally and commercially sustainable.

To keep such devices updated with the latest content, firmware, maps, and security updates, without congesting the whole network with one to one connections to each device, they need a One to Many distribution model for OTA updates.

Steinwurf’s OTAcast solves the challenge of efficient, scalable updates for exactly this type of scenario, so that smart cities and devices can stay smart!

Connected Car networks

Connected Car networks

Similar to IoT, but with potentially more immediate safety implications, cars, trucks and municipal vehicles are increasingly being connected to each other and the city infrastructure, to share data on safety, traffic, movement, hazards, and to enable safer autonomous driving.

These vehicles need to receive updates for such systems to overcome security vulnerabilities and unlock greater functionality from feature updates.

The only long term viable option is to give vehicles a system to update remotely, over the air, otherwise millions of cars will need to drive to the garage to receive an update, and all the while be vulnerable to security exploits or not have the latest features.

The NYCDOT Connected Car pilot uses Steinwurf’s FEC solution to deploy an OTA update network, placing devices in strategic locations around New York to send updates for thousands of connected vehicles in New York City.

Satellite Connected Devices

It is vital that devices in extremely remote locations have the ability to be updated remotely, whether it’s a seafaring vessel requiring regular ice maps to fish or navigate waters safely, or a rural agriculture operation or oil field with thousands of sensors which can only be connected via satellite and need security and firmware updates.

Using Steinwurf’s ‘stateless’ OTAcast FEC solution, such devices can be efficiently updated by a multicast satellite transmission over the satellite coverage area.

Regardless of the Satellite’s orbit, OTAcast will ensure devices are updated efficiently, with the ability to do so in the background to allow mission critical operations to continue, and downloads can pause and resume to account for sporadic connectivity.

Whatever your connectivity options, OTAcast can help keep your devices up to date.

Content updates for IFE systems

Content updates for IFE systems

Commercial Aircraft need regular programming updates available for 100’s of devices to access a catalogue of 1000’s of TV shows, movies, games, music and other content.

The weight of wiring up aircraft entertainment systems to each individual seat can be substantial, not to mention be hard to manage and operate with so many users. Also maintenance windows are short, making large system and content updates problematic.

Advanced Multicasting solutions powered by Steinwurf FEC can make such solutions wirelessly deliverable for a fraction of the ultimate operating weight of the aeroplane and the associated on-going operational fuel costs.

Not to mention giving passengers a grand library of entertainment options to choose from.
