Raft

Raft is Steinwurf’s new plug and play transport protocol which uses Steinwurf’s patented sliding window FEC to provide ultra low latency network connectivity for real time services.

Raft: The Protocol for Real-Time Interactive Apps

Raft makes the most efficient bandwidth to minimize latency and maximize reliability. Raft’s proprietary AI system adapts to network conditions by dynamically combining ARQ and Steinwurf’s FEC. The result is real-time transmissions free of high jitter & packet losses.

Modern interactive applications only work when connectivity meets tight latency and reliability requirements. Bandwidth availability might improve over time, but RTT and latency are fixed and governed by the speed of light: Raft wants to solve latency-related performance issues for good.

Packet loss can ruin the experience of delay-sensitive apps by introducing latency. While historical methods of repairing packet loss can work in static environments, these often fall short in dynamic, real-world scenarios, where packet loss rates fluctuate or are bursty.

Key Features

  • Raft intelligently adapts to changes in latency, packet loss, and available bandwidth by dynamically switching between ARQ and adaptable Sliding Window FEC, or using both depending on network conditions.

  • Content aware and adapts to changes in latency, packet loss, and available bandwidth.

  • Combines or switches between ARQ, adaptable Sliding Window FEC, or both according to network conditions

Functionality

  • Network latency estimation, network loss estimation, fully automatic mode, and composable with existing protocols

  • As a bonus - Raft can also intelligently mix & combine a number of different paths/channels, like Wi-Fi, Cellular, or WAN - to get data through and offer the final user the best user experience.
